A tsunami warning is issued after a magnitude 7 earthquake strikes Russia, according to a US monitor.

A little after seven in the morning, an earthquake with a depth of roughly fifty kilometers occurred in the waters off the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Washington:

Early Sunday morning local time saw an earthquake of magnitude 7, according to the regional seismic monitoring service, off the coast of Russia's far-eastern Kamchatka peninsula.

As per the Ministry of Local Emergencies, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of the region, and the coast were both affected by the earthquake's shocks.

The regional office of Russia's Emergencies Ministry in the Kamchatka area stated on Telegram that "operational teams of rescuers and firefighters are inspecting the buildings."

According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred just after 7 a.m. local time, around 90 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and at a depth of roughly 50 kilometers (30 miles).

After first issuing a tsunami warning, the US National Tsunami Warning Center eventually declared that the threat had gone. There was never a tsunami alert from the local government.

A number of minor aftershocks were detected following the main earthquake, according to a website post by Russia's Unified Geophysical Service's Kamchatka branch.

Over two dozen active volcanoes can be found inside the archipelago, which is situated on the seismically active "Ring of Fire" region that crosses a large portion of the Pacific.
